John E Campbell

Born 1968 in London and grew up in Edinburgh. He studied at Leith Academy Secondary School, where Russian Language, twentieth century Soviet culture and Imperial History where just three of the subjects taken. In 1984 he returned to London. He tested HIV+ in 1986 and was subsequently diagnosed with AIDS in 1988. After his diagnosis John spent the majority of his time working within the HIV sector here and abroad. He helped in the development and the establishing of services in the UK for those who are deaf or have a severe hearing impairment and intravenous drug users. He held the position of special advisor on HIV/AIDS to Her Majesty's Chief Inspector of Prisons for six years. John was a Co-founder of Positive Youth and was involved in ACT-UP UK and ACT-UP Internationally. He was instrumental in the development of Patient Partnership Programs with the pharmaceutical industry. In 1993 he Co-founded the UK Coalition of People Living with HIV an AIDS and in 1995 the magazine Positive Nation. In 1998 John was appointed Co-Chair and subsequently Acting Chair for the British Council of Disabled People, the first person with an invisible disability to be appointed to the post. Officially retiring in 1998 from working in HIV/AIDS in the UK he has continued working with Pharma and since 2001 has worked with the European Coalition of Positive People based in London, the All-Ukraine Network of People Living with HIV/AIDS and the Russian Network of People Living with HIV/AIDS.
